About Katharina Schwan MS, MPH, LCGC

As a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor with experience across a wide range of genetic specialties and a background in public health, I bring both clinical insight and a broader understanding of the systems that shape health. I offer thoughtful, personalized care designed to help you navigate genetic information with clarity, compassion, and confidence.

My Background

I hold a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from California State University, Stanislaus and a Master of Public Health in Global Health from Boston University. My clinical background spans prenatal and infertility care, as well as pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, and general genetics. I've trained and worked in both academic and clinical environments, gaining a wide perspective on how genetic information can meaningfully shape care across all stages of life.

My public health training informs how I show up as a counselor — with attention not only to the science, but also to the real-world systems and barriers that impact access to care. I believe in meeting people where they are and making genetics understandable and actionable, no matter their background or circumstances.

Like many of the people I work with, I didn’t grow up knowing much about genetic conditions — until I learned that hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) runs in my family. That experience didn’t just bring clarity to my own health; it changed my path and ultimately led me to genetic counseling. Having been on both sides of the conversation — as a patient and a provider — I carry a deep respect for each person’s story and the emotional complexity that can come with genetic information.

I’m based in Oakland, California, and licensed to provide genetic counseling in California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Washington. I also offer telehealth services to clients in states that do not currently require licensure.
